Diet principle for patients with Kidney Failure-Four Low and One High
Patients with Kidney Failure should pay more attention to their diet. Because of the damage of kidneys many toxins and metabolic wastes are accumulated in human body. These toxins can’t be discharged out of body, so we should avoid eating foods containing these wastes such as Potassium, Phosphorus and fat and so on. Patients with Kidney Failure should observe the diet principle “Four Low and One High”
◆ Low Potassium
Patients with Kidney Failure usually have hyperkalemia, which can lead to arrhythmia. Sometimes, people can have heart suspended and even lead to death. Although it id difficult for patients in resisting the temptation of delicious food, they should strictly pay attention to the diet advised by doctor. The reasonable diet for patients with Kidney Failure should contain Potassium no more than 2000mg everyday. As for patients at the end-stage Kidney Failure should intake Potassium no more than 1000mg.
Low Potassium Diet for People with Stage 4 CKD
There are some foods contain high Potassium such as raisin (highest), potato, fungus food, Rhizoma dioscoreae (Chinese Yam), pakchoi, red dates, banana, orange, peach, apricot, tremella, spinage, rape.
◆ Low Salt
Patients with Kidney Failure should strictly control the intake of salt. If they intake much salt, it may cause hypertension, and the accumulation of water in body, narrowing of blood vessel wall, the decreasing concentrating ability of kidney tubules, the decreasing ability of discharging Sodium . The reasonable diet for patients with Kidney Failure should contain salt no more than 3g everyday.
There are some foods contain high salt such as pickles, pizza slice, spaghetti sauce, cheese sauce, onion soup, macaroni and cheese, tunafish salad, submarine sandwich and potato salad.
◆ Low Phosphorus
Redundant phosphorus can lead to decreasing of blood calcium, which can also lead to renal bone disease and twitching of hands or legs. The reasonable diet for patients with Kidney Failure should contain Phosphorus no more than 600-800mg everyday.
Low Phosphorus Diet for People with Kidney Failure
There are foods contain high phosphorus such as sea foods and sea plants, pluck, sesame, tea, honey and egg yolk.
◆ Low Fat
Patients with Kidney Failure should intake low fat so as to avoid hyperlipemia, which can lead to renal arteriosclerosis and glomerulosclerosis. That is to say hyperlipemia can lead to necrotic kidney nephrons and declining of kidney function.
There are foods contain high fat such as animal oil so that people with Kidney Failure should avoid using animal oil. Corn oil is better because there is no saturated fatty acid. Greasy foods should be avoided.
◆ High Quality Protein
Patients with Kidney Failure should have high quality protein foods because of the leakage of protein through urine. However, patients should not intake too much, which can release ammonia and then aggravating the glomerulosclerosis.
There are foods contain high quality protein such as milk, egg white and lean meat (less than 100g). Patients should not eat diary products which contain inferior protein.
If you are patient with Kidney Failure or you are the relative of a patient with Kidney Failure, you should pay attention to the diet principle. Record the food you ate everyday. Please remember the proper intake of Potassium, salt, Phosphorus and fat or kidney function will be decreased quickly.
