Patients with kidney disease are concerned about creatinine level very much,
which is a significant index that can show the function of kidney. Creatinine is
the metabolism products from muscles which should be discharged out of the body
through the filtration of kidney. So if there is something wrong in the kidney,
doctor will remind us by increased level of creatinine in serum. However, in
many cases, we see different units following the level of serum, which are
either umol/l or mg/dl. What is the exchange rate? The exchange rate is 88.4.
For example, creatinine 106 umol/l equals creatinine 1.2 mg/dl. Creatinine 2
mg/dl equals creatinine 176.8.
In many cases, different countries have different descriptions. What’s more,
different countries and even different labs in one country have specific normal
range due to different facilities. For example, in China, we mainly use umol/l,
according which, we divide renal insufficiency into 4 stages. We also definite
uremia according to the fact that the serum creatinine is 707 umol/L. 707 is
also a sensitive figure which indicates kidney disease patients should take
dialysis in China.
One patient in our hospital is from New Zealand, who was diagnosed with IgA
Nephritis. When I talked about the expression of serum creatinine, he said in
New Zealand, their local place, they both use umol/L and mg/dl. Three days ago,
I made friends with a kidney disease patient from Ethiopia, an African country.
He said his creatinine is 1.37. He also told me that the local lab’s normal
range is 0.5 to 1.2 mg/dl.
No matter we use umol/L or mg/dl, we should follow the local lab’s criteria.
Once it rises, we should pay more attention for once it rise, it indicates that
there must be something wrong in the kidney and there must be damaged intrinsic
cells in the kidney. We should treat it in time so as to stop more healthy renal
intrinsic cells from being damaged. In Shijiazhuang Kidney Disease Hospital,
patients with high creatinine are suggested to use Micro-Chinese Medicine, which
can repair the damaged intrinsic cells and rebuild renal structure, thus
reviving renal function.
