‘I have pain in waist, does it mean that I have kidney problem?’. A lot of
people often ask me this question. Is there some relationship between pain in
waist and kidney problem?
Pain in waist is a most common clinical symptom. It might be that there are
kidneys in the waist, when people talk about ‘pain in waist’, they will consider
whether they are being attacked by kidney problem firstly. Actually, there are
so many reasons that can cause pain in waist, and most of the patients with
kidney problem don’t have pain in waist.
Taking the middle of the waist for an example, there are skin, muscle,
ligament, back bone, rib, spinal membrane, spinal cord and other tissues. Lesion
in any one of the above tissues can cause pain in waist. Such as excessive
strength when carrying heavy things, falling from high place, accident damage
when doing sports and so on can cause traumatic pain in waist. For some
founders, miners, actors, and porters and so on, if they have pain in waist
without any history of traumatic pain in waist, it might be related with chronic
damage of fascia, muscle tendon, ligament and so on. Long time bending and
sitting can cause pain in waist due to chronic damage of muscle. Senile
Osteoporosis, protrasion of the lumbar intervertebral disci,
spinalosteoarthritis, Andylosing spondylitis and other disease all can cause
pain in waist.
Kidney belongs to substantial organ, which are located in the two sides of
spinal column behind peritoneum, one at both side, and shaped like broad bean.
There is no sensory nerve in the renal tissues, and patients cannot feel any
pain when they have lesions in their kidneys. Even some patients with end stage
renal failure, they go to digestive department due to nausea, vomiting, poor
appetite, or they go to blood department due to weakness or anemia. But there is
sensory nerve in renal capsule, ureter, and pelvis, patients can have pain in
renal region when these places have lesions. Stones, blood mass, necrotic
tissues blocking in ureter, can cause renal colic. Pain caused by acute
nephritis, acute pelvis nephritis, formation of thrombus in renal vein,
hydronephrosis, PKD and kidney cancer is usually caused by the damage of renal
capsule due to the swelling kidneys. Abscess in renal region, renal infarction
complicated by rupture of renal cysts, and Perinephric hematoma and other
perinephric disease can also cause pain in waist. Nephroptosis can cause pain in
waist as well.
Then, if people have pain in waist, what should they do? And what kind of
test they should take? The most simple method is taking a urine test, if there
is occult blood, protein, blood, blood cells, and other abnormal cells in the
urine, people should go to renal department to have a further test, so that the
disease can be diagnosed in the early stage.
