Edema which is also known as swelling in some countries is very common among
people with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).
Edema means there are excessive fluid in the gap of the tissues outside the
blood vessels. It is a pathological process and the fluid comes from blood. Many
reasons can cause edema and according to the causes, edema can be divided into
cardiac edema, renal edema, hepatic edema, nutritional edema, allergic edema,
endocrine edema, edema caused by connective tissue disease, idiopathic edema and
many others.(Swelling and Kidney Disease)
Renal edema refers to the edema caused by renal dysfunction. Edema appearing
in Chronic Kidney Disease generally is resulted from two kinds of situations.
The first one is that glomerular filtration function decreases, but reabsorption
function of renal tubule still keeps normal. At that time, on one hand, the
excessive fluid can not be filtered out; on the other hand, most of the filtered
fluid is reabsorbed by renal tubule. As a result, most of the fluids are kept in
the body, which is manifested as edema. Another situation is that large amount
of protein are lost along with the urine. in terms of people with Chronic Kidney
Disease, their kidneys are damaged and can not stop protein from being leaked.
Consequently, large amount of protein get out of our body. Protein exists in the
blood, and reducing of protein will cause the decrease of solute concentration,
leading to the imbalance between the inside and outside of the blood vessels. To
keep balance between them, much more fluid in the blood vessels will ooze and
then get into the gap among tissues. Finally, edema appears.
Edema caused by Chronic Kidney Disease usually appears in the loose tissues
firstly such as the eyelids, face and ankles. It is more obvious in the morning
and then relieved in the noon or afternoon. In serious cases, edema can appear
in the whole body.
Although edema is one of the common symptoms of Chronic Kidney Disease, it
does not always kidney disease. Therefore, once you suffer from edema, you
should go to hospital to do examination to find out the root causes of it.
Moreover, caused by Chronic Kidney Disease also can affect its sufferers’
appetite by making them vomit, so treating edema is also essential for sufferers
from kidney disease. for more information, please email to me or consult our
